A delightful market townrenowned for its medieval allure and vibrant cultural scene is the UK's "best high street". Nestled in Shropshire, Shrewsbury features more than 660 heritage buildings and sits embraced by the winding River Severn.

Its timber-framed Tudor buildings, alongside the prestigious Shrewsbury Castle and Abbey, embody the spirit of British heritage. The town flourishes with independent retailers dotting the streets, providing everything from fine dining establishments to charming tea rooms. Remarkably, it's where evolutionary scientist Charles Darwin was born, with commemorations including the Darwin Trail scattered throughout the town, reports the Mirror.

Taking centre stage is Wyle Cop, a thoroughfare that has been hailed by the Telegraph as Britain's best high street, celebrated for its dramatic incline, historical significance and vibrant collection of independent boutiques and restaurants.

Wyle Cop features stunning Georgian and Tudor architecture and guides visitors towards attractions such as Shrewsbury Abbey and The Quarry park.

It is also claimed to house the longest stretch of unbroken independent retailers in Britain, presenting a goldmine of unique discoveries and handcrafted treasures. Shrewsbury's charm extends far beyond its picturesque high street.

The town boasts an abundance of historical gems including Shrewsbury Castle and Shrewsbury Abbey.

One delighted visitor expressed their amazement after exploring the Abbey on TripAdvisor: "Lost count how many times I have been to Shrewsbury but never here. What a beautiful place packed with history and beautiful stained glass windows. The choir and orchestra were practicing while there with only me and nine other people in attendance. What an honour."

Another traveller gushed: "Shrewsbury is one of those places that you always mean to visit yet never quite manage it but this time I got there and it was well worth the time!"

Those seeking to relax surrounded by greenery can explore the Dingle Gardens, a sprawling 29-acre riverside park lovingly designed by renowned horticulturist Percy Thrower.

A peaceful stroll alongside the River Severn or a serene river journey aboard the celebrated Sabrina vessel, featuring captivating commentary, rank amongst the most favoured pursuits for tourists.
