Millions of homes across the UK are affected by damp, with around two million people thought to be living in properties with serious mould issues. While sprays and special paints may help, one low-maintenance houseplant could offer a natural solution.
As temperatures drop and windows stay closed for longer, humidity levels inside the home can rise. That's when the risk of mould increases, especially in bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchens. Luckily, one popular indoor plant has been praised for its ability to absorb moisture, reduce toxins, and even improve air quality while you sleep.
Experts say this "set and forget" plant can survive in almost any lighting, needs hardly any care, and is ideal for windowsills and bedrooms where it can quietly work to reduce damp and stop mould growing.
It's called the Snake Plant, and it's being recommended by experts at The Residence Collection as one of the top plants for fighting mould and moisture indoors.
The experts said: "Snake Plants are great at absorbing toxins and moisture from the air, which helps reduce the dampness that mould loves.
"Plus, they release oxygen at night, which can improve air quality while you sleep, boosting the overall freshness of your home."
Also known as Mother-in-Law's Tongue, the plant thrives in a wide range of conditions.

It doesn't need much light or water and can survive with very little attention, making it ideal for bedrooms or shaded windows.
But the Snake Plant isn't the only option. Experts also recommended a number of other mould-fighting plants that work well in kitchens, bathrooms, and living rooms.
English Ivy is great at trapping airborne mould spores with its thick leaves, while Peace Lilies act as natural dehumidifiers by pulling moisture from the air.
Boston Ferns and Spider Plants are also known for balancing humidity.
They're particularly suited to areas with indirect light, such as kitchens or bathrooms, where they can soak up excess moisture and keep air quality high.
Aloe Vera was also mentioned for its mould-fighting and antifungal properties.
It thrives on a sunny windowsill and absorbs moisture in the air while doubling as a natural remedy for skin.
But for those who want something simple and effective, the Snake Plant remains one of the best choices.
The experts added: "Snake Plants are the ultimate low-maintenance houseplants. Whether your window gets a lot of light or just a little, Snake Plants will happily settle in and thrive."
