A Russell Group UK university has sparked huge debate by serving halal-only meat to students. Newcastle University, currently ranked 30th in the Times/Sunday Times Good University Guide 2025, reportedly now has no non halal meats on its menu.

Stating that they "cater for a variety of dietary requirements, based on demand" it is currently unknown if this policy is new or not. The University adds that "all main meals containing meat allowed within a Halal diet (Beef or Chicken), produced by the University's Hospitality team, is Halal certified".

The seemingly new move has caused a huge debate with many social media users questioning why students can't make their own choice over whether to eat Halal meat or not.

Weighing in on the discussion Reform UK politician Darren Grimes says the move has caused deep "unease" about animal welfare adding that this should not be forced on students.

He said: "Newcastle University has moved all of its meat options to Halal-friendly options. Many of us have deeply held unease about animal welfare here - why must this be forced upon us?"

The now viral post has gained over 10k likes and just under 750 comments. In response one user questioned why an "English university has bended its entire menu to one faith's demands".

A second added: "Students shouldn't have to compromise ethics just to eat lunch."

"I suspect I've eaten halal on airlines and in restaurants. Not my choice tho and it's ridiculous that our universities are doing this. They can eat vegetarian if they don't like our meat. Why do we have to be forced to eat halal?", said a third.

However, some were for the policy as one said: "Halal friendly is animal-free meals".

"It isn't being forced on anyone. You could dine elsewhere or choose the veggie options", said a second.

In a seperate post Rupert Lowe, who was once elected for Reform UK and now sits as an Independent MP for Great Yarmouth, said: "Let's put the pressure on Newcastle University.

"Why are they serving halal-only meat to students? Britain is not a Muslim country. Students deserve a choice on what meat they consume. We must demand change."

A second questioned: "I'm wondering whether this filters down to the students? Are they aware?"

On the university's website it states that "with enough notice, we can cater for most dietary requirements; simply let us know what you need when making your order".

In response the university says products that contain halal meat are "clearly labelled".

A Newcastle University spokesperson said: "Our campus cafes cater for a wide variety of dietary requirements including pescatarian, vegan and vegetarian. Where a product contains halal meat, it is clearly labelled with the well-established halal emblem to help customers choose appropriately.

"We regularly review our catering offer in response to feedback and will take on board customer concerns."
