It can make your heart sink when you turn on the tap only to discover the water is not draining away properly - but unblocking a clog can be very easy if you use the right items. There are lots of DIY remedies online on how to unclog a drain, with the most common being white vinegar and baking soda, but it will not work unless you mix it with a degreasing product.
When vinegar and baking soda are mixed together, they create a fizzy reaction, and this movement can help dislodge debris to flush it away. However, this fizzy solution is quite weak and will not be able to get rid of grease, which is what causes most clogs since so much food scraps, soap and oil go down the drain daily.
Grease will cause a slimy film to cover pipes and over time this coating will get thicker and cannot be removed with just white vinegar and baking soda.
However, the cleaning experts at Get Home Things has shared it is possible to unclog a drain without chemicals, as you simply need to also add washing up liquid.
They said: "If you've got a clogged sink drain, don't head straight for the chemical drain clog remover - try using some washing up liquid first!"
It might sound strange, but washing up liquid has been designed to break down grease on plates, and will also be very effective at getting rid of any greasy build up in a drain.
Washing up liquid simply enhances the reaction between vinegar and baking soda by creating foam, which also loosens grease particles to quickly clear your sink. .

All you need to do is pour 60g of baking soda into the drain followed by roughly 120ml of vinegar.
Let this fizz a little, and then also add a few squirts (roughly 45ml) of washing up liquid into the drain as well.
Then, leave the solution alone for at least 15 minutes. This gives the white vinegar and baking soda time to fizz out while the washing up liquid will dissolve the grease.
Once the time is up, fill the kettle, boil it, and then slowly pour it down the drain. It will help flush out the clog now that the grease has loosened up and wil unblock your sink.
This is a practical way to get rid of a clog using only items you have in your kitchen and without needing to use any harsh chemical solutions that could damage your sink or pipes.
