Piers Morgan has said running for Prime Minister is on the cards and that he would take inspiration from US President Donald Trump. The 60-year-old presenter admitted that he would be open to the idea of venturing into politics after a lifelong career in journalism. He said that there had been talk about "PM for PM", to which he said: "Why not?" Speaking to Saga Magazine, the host of Uncensored on YouTube said that there are lots of concerns among Brits whether it's over the "NHS, stopping the boats or the state of the roads".

"I would call (French) president (Emmanuel) Macron and tell him that unless he did something about the boats, we would tax French imports by 1,000%. It's time to get tough," he said. Mr Morgan added that his ideal manifesto would include a 1% tax on income that would go straight to the NHS. He later admitted that while he hasn't had any desire to be in politics before, he believes the current political landscape is "shockingly mediocre".

Speaking in more detail to Sally Nugent and Ben Thompson on BBC Breakfast he explained that when he was younger, he felt the cabinet was "all smart and intellectual people", yet he believes that is no longer the case.

He said that paying MPs a salary of £1m a year may incentivise them to do better. "If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys. If you pay politicians better, and with that more accountability, we demand more from them."

Mr Morgan hit out at Sir Keir Starmer while praising Mr Trump, saying the UK Prime Minister is making pledges he's not keeping and dishing out "false promises."

He said: "This is the problem, I like Trump, the Trump style. I wouldn't mind a bit of Trumpism here. Not necessarily everything that comes out of his mouth, but he gets through the normal nonsense of political speak. You know where he stands. You get the unfiltered opinion of the President of the United States."

He continued: "There's something empowering about a leader who will make decisions and, as we saw last week, occasionally have massive success doing that."
