Coroner Dan Hollis told People magazine that Brandon Douglas Blackstock “passed away peacefully at his home in Butte, Montana on August 7th under hospice care surrounded by his family.” The coroner confirmed the cause was melanoma, which Brandon had been fighting for over three years.
A statement from the family said, “Brandon bravely battled cancer for more than three years. He passed away peacefully and was surrounded by family. We thank you for your thoughts and prayers and ask everyone to respect the family’s privacy during this very difficult time.”
On August 6, 2025, Kelly Clarkson posted on Instagram that she was postponing the rest of her August Studio Sessions in Las Vegas. She wrote, “While I normally keep my personal life private, this past year, my children’s father has been ill and at this moment, I need to be fully present for them.” The couple share two children, River Rose Blackstock, 11, and Remington Alexander Blackstock, 9.

Brandon Blackstock’s 18-year-old son, Seth Blackstock, posted a touching message on Instagram after his father’s death: “I lost my hero yesterday… You were a father, a son, a brother, and most importantly my best friend. I’ll see you every day when the sun rises and falls.”
Melissa Ashworth Wells, his ex-wife, portrayed him as "a gentleman who loved hard and fought hard," adding that his grandkids will carry on his legacy as his kids Seth and Savannah Blackstock, 23.
Shelby Blackstock, Brandon Blackstock's brother, also spoke softly and said he would be "funny, bright, and full of life," hence missed.
The family is now concentrating on supporting one another, especially Brandon Blackstock's kids, as they deal with this terrible loss.
