Baby food pouches recalled due to lead contamination

Send Push
Sprout Organics, a baby and toddler food company, has expanded an earlier voluntary recall of its food pouches due to potentially elevated lead levels. The recall affects the products sold in 28 states. Here’s everything you need to know about the recall.

What is the recalled product?

The affected product is Sprout Organics® Sweet Potato Apple and Spinach, packaged in 3.5-ounce pouches. On Tuesday, the company announced that it is recalling additional lots of this product. On Sept. 16, the company had recalled one lot of its Sprout Organics Sweet Potato Apple and Spinach food pouches. No illnesses have been reported to date, and no other Sprout Organics products are impacted by this voluntary recall.

Why is the product recalled?

The recall was initiated after routine sampling revealed potentially elevated levels of lead in the product. This recall is being made with the knowledge of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Lead exposure, even at low levels, is linked to multiple health problems. “Exposure to lead, even at low levels, may increase blood lead levels. Additional signs and symptoms of lead exposure are more likely with acute exposure to higher levels of lead or chronic exposure to lead. The effects of lead depend upon the amount and duration of exposure and age/body weight. If a child is exposed to enough lead for a protracted period of time, this can affect learning and development or cause other long-term health problems,” the federal agency said in a release.
