“I had to go through it”: Stephen Curry opens up about the tough decision that tested his relationship with Ayesha Curry

Amid all the mess, Stephen Curry has opened up about how his now wife, Ayesha Curry, stood by his side when they had initially started dating, more than a decade ago. A few weeks ago, Stephen Curry spoke to PEOPLE about his new memoir, Shot Ready, when he opened up about how he had to make a choice between attending college and joining the NBA in 2009.

Stephen Curry said, “We had just started dating, or about a year and some change in, and I was deciding whether I was gonna go to the draft or not, and, you know, communication, trust, and the whole deal — being able to… I was going through it…”

The NBA legend opened up about how the decision felt emotionally heavy as he added, “It was weird ’cause I was picking between realising the NBA dream and leaving college early, and not being able to see those four years through…And I loved school and the experience and playing for Coach McKillop at Davidson.”

While Stephen Curry chose not to follow through on Ayesha Curry’s advice as she encouraged him to complete his education first, the NBA legend admitted that this was the moment that made him feel she was the one for him.

Stephen Curry said, “That conversation and the emotions that I got to share really just established the fact that she was gonna be my biggest supporter no matter what I did…So, it’s a core memory for me personally, but also for our relationship,”
