NEW DELHI: A 44-year-old consultant anaesthetist left a patient under anaesthesia during surgery to engage in sexual activity with a nurse in another operating theatre.

The incident occurred at Tameside Hospital, Greater Manchester, on 16 September 2023.

The consultant has been identified as Dr Suhail Anjum .

The incident was witnessed by a colleague, Nurse NT, who reported seeing Anjum and the nurse, referred to as Nurse C, in a compromising position.

According to BBC, the consultant anaesthetist had said he needed a "comfort break" and asked another nursing colleague to monitor the male patient halfway through the procedure.

Instead, Anjum went to another operating theatre at the hospital in Ashton-under-Lyne where he had sexual activity with a woman referred to in the hearing as Nurse C.

According to a report in Daily Mail, Anjum, who now works in Pakistan, said, "he felt shame and guilt at this horribly embarrassing incident, I don't know why it happened. I don't know what I was thinking."
