US President Donald Trump on Monday pooh-poohed the idea of a "big, beautiful" briefing room in White House, triggering laughter among the reporters present there.

Trump, who was holding a press conference to announce the federalisation of Washington, DC, jokingly denied a reporter's request for a large briefing room.

When he asked Trump, "Sir, you are building a big beautiful ballroom , can you build us a larger press briefing room ?" the US president smiled and said, "I don't want you to be comfortable. I don't want to do that."

Trump's reply sparked laughter among the officials and reporters present there.

Moments earlier, the US president declared Monday as " Liberation Day in DC ," as he announced the rollout of "a historic action to rescue our nation's capital from crime, bloodshed, bedlam, and squalor, and worse."

"Washington, D.C. will be LIBERATED today! Crime, Savagery, Filth, and Scum will DISAPPEAR. I will, MAKE OUR CAPITAL GREAT AGAIN!
