Girlalala , whose real name was Maurice Harrison , was a well-known 21-year-old Black transgender TikTok creator from Lauderdale Lakes, Florida. She had many followers online and was loved for her bright smile and fun hair videos. She was shot and killed on November 15, 2025, during a fight with her boyfriend, 25-year-old Shanoyd Whyte Jr. After her death, a new family fight began. This fight is not about the case or the police report. It is about how Girlalala should look at her funeral.
Her father posted videos on Instagram. In his video, he said he was angry that some people wanted to bury his child with a wig. He said he would not go to the funeral if she was shown that way. His words spread fast online. Many people began talking about respect, gender identity , family choices, and how a loved one should be honored after death. Fans, friends, and LGBTQ+ groups shared their thoughts as the story grew across social media.
TikTok star's Father says he wants “pop smoke braids” for Girlalala
In his video, Girlalala’s father spoke with strong emotion. He said people were “doing this for the show” and not thinking about his child. He said he loved Girlalala but did not want the funeral to show her in a way that went against “how God gave him.” Because of this, he said he would not attend if she was buried wearing a wig.
He added that the public viewing would still be open. Fans could come and say goodbye. But he repeated that he would not join the funeral if a wig was used. He said, “Put my son in some pop smoke braids with a short tape or an afro for the last time.”
His comments brought strong reactions. Many LGBTQ+ advocates said that honoring a person’s gender identity after death is very important. They said Girlalala lived proudly as a transgender woman and should be remembered in the same way. Others said families often struggle with grief and identity at the same time.
Police records say Shanoyd Whyte Jr. waved down deputies near the scene and showed them the car where Girlalala was found with many gunshot wounds. She was unresponsive. Officers later saw surveillance video of Shanoyd Whyte holding what looked like a gun. He has now been charged with first-degree murder .
