Israel-Hamas conflict: IDF dismisses senior commanders over lapses linked to Oct 7 attack; cites 'systemic failure'

Israel’s military on Sunday dismissed three generals and issued disciplinary measures against several senior officers for failures linked to Hamas’s October 2023 assault. IDF Chief of Staff Lt Gen Eyal Zamir announced the actions on Sunday, citing major shortcomings in preparedness and response.

The officers dismissed include three divisional commanders, one of whom was serving as the military’s intelligence chief at the time. In a statement issued Sunday, the IDF said all three hold personal responsibility for the armed forces’ failure to prevent the Hamas attack from Gaza.

“This is a severe, resounding, and systemic failure that relates to decisions and conduct before and during the event. The lessons of that day are many and important, and they must serve as our compass for the future, toward which I intend to lead the army," Zamir said in a video statement, as cited by the Times of Israel.

"The IDF failed in its principal mission on October 7 — to protect the citizens of the State of Israel,” Zamir said.

The decision follows a call two weeks ago by Zamir for a “systemic investigation” into the failures surrounding the attack, even as the government has yet to establish a state commission of inquiry despite mounting public pressure, as cited by the Times of Israel.

The investigation also concluded that “deficient decision-making processes and force deployment during the night of October 7, 2023," and cited failures across the chain of command.

Israel’s minister of defence, Israel Katz, said Monday that he had assigned the defence establishment’s comptroller, Yair Wolansky, to review the report and assess whether additional investigations were required.

The dismissed generals had already resigned, including former Southern Command head Gen Yaron Finkelman.

The military also announced disciplinary measures against the heads of the navy and air force, as well as actions targeting four additional generals and several senior officers.

For the past two years, Netanyahu has maintained that the failures leading to the October 7 attacks should be examined only after the war in Gaza concludes.

Hamas’s attack on southern Israel in October 2023 killed 1,221 people and triggered a two-year war in Gaza. Israel’s subsequent military campaign has killed at least 69,756 people, according to figures from Gaza's health ministry.

Inside Gaza on Monday, the Israeli military reported that its forces shot three militants who had crossed the “Yellow Line,” the boundary to which troops pulled back under last month’s ceasefire agreement. Hamas has repeatedly accused Israel of moving the Yellow Line deeper into areas under its control, describing the practice as a breach of the ceasefire terms, as cited by AFP.
