'People may still be trapped': Moment Russian missiles hit Kyiv neighbourhood - watch

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Thursday urged fresh, tougher sanctions on Russia after at least eight people, including a child, were killed in a massive overnight missile and drone attack on Kyiv.

Footage captured the moment Russian missiles slammed into a residential neighbourhood of the capital, Ukraine’s largest city. The video shows an ordinary Kyiv street just seconds before the blasts tore through it.

According to the Ukraine Air Force, 629 drones and missiles - 598 and 31 respectively - were fired, the second highest figure of the entire war.

“People may still be trapped under the rubble. Dozens are wounded. These Russian missiles and drones are a direct response to all those who, for weeks and months, have been calling for a ceasefire and for ‘real diplomacy,’” Zelenskyy wrote on X.

The Ukrainian president accused Moscow of opting for “ballistics” over dialogue and alleged that “at least part of the world” continues to turn a blind eye to the killing of Ukrainian children while seeking “excuses” for Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

“We expect a response from everyone in the world who has called for peace but now chooses silence over principled positions,” he added, singling out China and Hungary.

Despite US President Donald Trump’s push for a ceasefire, Russia has continued raining down aerial strikes on Ukrainian cities while simultaneously talking up the need to end the war, now in its third year since beginning in February 2022.

Images released by Zelenskyy showed a five-storey crater blasted through an apartment block, ripping the building in two. Nearby homes and small businesses also had their windows blown out by the force of the explosions.
