Donald Trump ’s long-running quest for the Nobel Peace Prize came to an end on Friday, and social media wasted no time reacting. As Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado was announced as this year’s laureate, users across platforms erupted with a mix of relief, ridicule and mock sympathy for the US president who has made no secret of his desire for the prestigious award.

“The fact Donald Trump very publicly wanted the Nobel Peace Prize and didn’t get it is enough to make today a good day,” one user wrote, summing up the mood among many of the US president’s critics. Others posted mock versions of Trump’s own style of online outrage, with one viral post reading: “NOBODY ENDED MORE WARS THAN ME. STILL NO NOBEL PRIZE! TOTALLY RIGGED. VERY SAD!”

Many rejoiced that the honour went instead to Machado, who was praised by the Norwegian Nobel Committee “for her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela .” One user wrote, “Hallelujah, it’s NOT Donald Trump,” while another said, “Machado fights dictators. Trump praises them.”

But the reaction wasn’t entirely one-sided. Some of Trump’s supporters questioned the decision, contrasting it with Barack Obama’s 2009 Nobel win. “Say what you will about Trump,” wrote journalist Brian McDonald, “but compared with Obama’s pre-emptive Nobel, he at least has a couple of actual peace processes on his CV.” Another account posted sarcastically: “President Trump, don’t be sad — there are still more wars to end.”

There was also the familiar blend of parody and political snark that accompanies most Trump-related moments online. “There would be a big tariff on the Nobel Peace Prize Committee. Tremendous peace work deserves respect,” one joked. Another shared an image captioned, “Trump getting ready for the White House after losing the Nobel Prize,” showing the president looking dejected.

A few commentators saw the award as symbolic. “Honouring Machado is like draping a superhero cape on a whisper in the dark,” wrote @truthdotphd. “It shows that bravery can become contagious.” Others, however, called the prize a “popularity contest,” insisting that “Trump is brokering peace all over the globe — again.”
