Commentary
  • Right then, another day that belonged to South Africa. Disappointment for the Indians as they are staring at another potential whitewash at home. Still early to say, but the writing seems to be on the wall. The best result they can squeeze out from this one is to drag it into a draw. But for that, if and when the Proteas declare, or the Indians bowl the tourists out, they will still have to come out to bat and dig deep. South Africa will effectively begin Day 4 with 314 on the board, and they will aim to stretch the game far away from India's reach. Action will resume on 25th November, Tuesday, with the first ball scheduled to be bowled at 9 am IST (3.30 am GMT). But do join us for the buildup a bit earlier. Till then, take care, cheers!
  • South Africa's Marco Jansen is in for a chat. He says there was nice pace and bounce in the wicket, although not a lot of swing on offer. Shares that once they saw the pace and bounce in the surface, he tried to make full use of it. He reflects that it was a good day for the team and for him personally, and credits the spinners for doing an excellent job when the ball wasn’t doing much for the quicks. He admits he was a bit lucky to be the one who cashed in. Mentions that they thought they would have to field for two days, so today was all about turning up and doing the job. He adds that it is still a good wicket for batting, though the ball is starting to turn a touch, and every now and then one holds in the surface.
  • Both Kuldeep and Sundar batted together for about half an hour in the final session, but their resistance was cut short sooner by Simon Harmer, and with South Africa opting for the second new ball, the wheels just came off for India. Marco Jansen completed with 6 wickets to his name, while Harmer got a three-fer. The Proteas didn't enforce the follow-on and came out to bat, using a light roller toward the backend of the day. They technically started with 288 runs and Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton ensured that they remained unblemished till the end.
  • The afternoon session started as a nightmare for India. Rishabh Pant departed to a questionable shot when his team desperately needed him to dig in, and Marco Jansen piled on the misery with a sharp short ball barrage. The hosts further collapsed in a heap, all the way down to 122/7. But Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav stemmed the bleeding with some gritty resistance. As the ball got older and softer, it lost that vicious bite from the morning spell. The pitch flattened out sufficiently for batting, and the pair grew more confident, showing that runs were available if you were willing to apply yourself and spend time at the crease.
  • The opening hour of the morning belonged to India as the openers negotiated the pacers comfortably before Jaiswal started cashing in on the loose deliveries. But the spinners flipped the script completely. Maharaj and Harmer found their rhythm immediately, looping it up perfectly between 75 and 85 clicks, making the ball grip and turn viciously. KL Rahul fell just before drinks, but Jaiswal pushed on to a composed fifty with Sai Sudharsan settling in alongside him. Then disaster struck. Harmer ripped through the middle order with two quick strikes, dismissing both left-handers, and Jurel threw his wicket away with an uninspiring shot, completely misjudging the pace of the surface. Which, in fact, was the case with most of the Indian batters getting out. India tumbled from 95/1 to 102/4 in a flash.
  • And... that's it for the day. The light has deteriorated and the umps take the players off the field. Another highly absorbing day of cricket comes to a close. It's STUMPS on Day 3 with South Africa well and truly in the driver's seat, dictating all the terms. India have struggled throughout this Test. First, they were made to toil hard with the ball for over 150 overs, and then they couldn't even bat for one full day, and were forced to bowl once again in the twilight. They would have expected to get a couple of wickets, but the Proteas openers just closed that door with sensible batting.
